Dr. Marbán is principal co-founder of Capricor and serves as chairman of the company’s Scientific Advisory Board. Much of Dr. Marbán’s esteemed professional career in cardiac research has been dedicated to developing novel treatments for heart disease. His inventions have formed the basis for Capricor’s cell therapies and those of two other biotechnology companies, Paralex, subsequently acquired by Cardiome Pharma, and Excigen, Inc.

A widely recognized pioneer in the world of cardiac stem cell science, Dr. Marbán applies his deep understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of heart disease to discovering new therapeutic approaches to heart failure, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias and related disorders.

Dr. Marbán is currently the Director of the Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he led the groundbreaking NIH-funded clinical trial, CADUCEUS, based on his cardiac stem cell technology. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading scientific journals and has directed multiple team science programs. For ten years, Marbán served as editor in chief of Circulation Research, one of the leading journals in cardiology.

Prior to joining Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Marbán was with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was Chief of Cardiology, the Michel Mirowski Professor of Cardiology, and the Director of the Donald W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center.

Dr. Marbán’s scientific honors include the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American Heart Association (AHA), the Basic Research Prize of the AHA, the Research Achievement Award of the International Society for Heart Research, and the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American College of Cardiology.
